VMWare Backups failing with error code 6

Hello again people,

So I am in the process of testing VMWare backups before we roll it out across production but I have hit a stumbling block...I am able to backup all the VM's that have been populated in vSphere Web Client using the automatic query function via NBD but when I change transport method to SAN (the preferred method) some backups are successful and others are not.

I have read so many forum discussions/tech notes/logs that my eyes are close to bleeding and have tried a plethora of things. Here is an overview of versions etc:

Master server is Linux RHEL5 running 7.6

Media Server is also Linux RHEL5 running 7.6

Appliance - 5220 on Linux (2.6.32.59-0.7) and running 7.6

VM version - 10

VMWare Tools version - 9354

vSphere Web Client - version 5.5

So I started troubleshooting by making sure that the luns were being presented to the media server correctly. This was confirmed by storage team. I then got the storage team to check that the media servers were zoned into the appliance (final resting place for the data) which they also confirmed as being correct. I may be wrong here but I guess this is further confimed by the fact I can backup via NBD.

Anyways I then setup vxms logs as that seemed to be the 'go to' log on other threads and found the following errors in there:

03/25/2015 12:00:10 : g_vixInterfaceLogger:libvix.cpp:1825 <DEBUG> : [VFM_ESINFO] DISKLIB-LINK  : "san://snapshot-765[S57ESXVMFS171] up000513/up000513.vmdk@sluvcpe2v55?svc-app-vc-vadp/XXX" : failed to open (You do not have access rights to this file).

03/25/2015 12:00:10 : g_vixInterfaceLogger:libvix.cpp:1825 <DEBUG> : [VFM_ESINFO] DISKLIB-CHAIN : "san://snapshot-765[S57ESXVMFS171] up000513/up000513.vmdk@sluvcpe2v55?svc-app-vc-vadp/XXX" : failed to open (You do not have access rights to this file).

03/25/2015 12:00:10 : g_vixInterfaceLogger:libvix.cpp:1825 <DEBUG> : [VFM_ESINFO] DISKLIB-LIB   : Failed to open 'san://snapshot-765[S57ESXVMFS171] up000513/up000513.vmdk@sluvcpe2v55?svc-app-vc-vadp/XXX' with flags 0x1e You do not have access rights to this file (3390).

After seeing this I asked the VM admin if there was any difference in rights between account we are using, the clusters the vm's sit on etc etc to which he replied no everything is the same.

I have attached the full log for your viewing along with detailed status of failed job so if anyone has some spare time for some reading/advice I would be most appreciative. If you need any further logs to help troubleshooting just let me know

Regards,

Marty, a fellow Netbackup-er
