hyper v snapshot backups

Hi
My setup is as below
Nbu 7.6.0.2 on windows 2012
Hyper v on windows 2012
I have noticed that the vm snapshot backup size is the total size.of vm including unused space. Is this expected or is there some setting that i am missing
